After that the screen changes and shows signs and posters that say they want change. He wants them to have a choice and have a good life. It shows that he wants the younger kids to grow up different than he had to. Singing about killing and drugs because he had to, and the camera focuses on the young girl in the lower left quadrant of the screen. In the following clip he speaks about how he knows that he has done wrong. This is his way of telling everyone to stand up and show out. He wants them to be the focal point in this part. In the last minute of the song, he begins to show people of different ages and genders standing up and protesting.
They will only become stronger and fight harder until they get what they deserve. In this same area Lil Baby says, “You can’t fight fire with fire I know, but at least we can turn up the flames some.” I believe this symbolizes that they are going to fight for what they believe in and won’t stop coming back. I assume that was Lil Baby’s way of really showing who is in the wrong. The video shows the police officers throwing tear gas into a group of protesters who were being peaceful. The camera is very frequently moving between clips of people holding up a variation of signs that have something to do with defunding the police. Towards the second half of the video, the camera and footage begins to focus more on the police instead of the protestors. Similarly, in “Rap Music” by Tricia Rose, she states that, “The most frequent style of rap was a variation on the toast to a boastful, bragging form of oral storytelling sometimes explicitly political and often aggressive, violent, and sexist.” (21) This relates to whenever Lil Baby is talking about police brutality, and the Black Lives Matter movement considering it has become an extremely popular subject within politics. Within the next few seconds, there is a part of a clip where a young woman is holding up a sign that states, “I am afraid to have kids because you are killing my brothers and sisters.” In this case, “you” directed toward the police force. The camera then goes back to a clip of Lil Baby standing in solidarity during a Black Lives Matter protest in Atlanta, Georgia. This may also be a way to get people who don’t watch the news to see what is going on. I believe that this is because Lil Baby wants the viewers to see what is really happening. The camera begins to slowly move towards the side until the news footage is shown. The cameras were angled directly towards them because they are the focal point in this clip. In the very beginning of the video, it starts off with footage of a peaceful protest.
Both the video and the lyrics give you information about what is going on in today’s world. In many ways, this relates to Tricia Rose’s, “Rap Music”. It is about racism, police brutality, and it also has a political background. “The Bigger Picture” is a video about the current issues in today’s society. The video I chose for my visual analysis is “The Bigger Picture” by Lil Baby.
